What is causing a crisis at FDDI?

what-is-causing-a-crisis-at-fddi Students and management of FDDI (under Commerce Ministry) are facing a peculiar situation these days. The management lodged an FIR on April 22 against unknown persons for vandalism. The institute's properties have been reportedly destroyed by students agitating for conferment of their degrees. Although students passed out long ago, they have not been awarded their degrees and this has made them lose their patience. The story goes that last year, the UGC refused to recognise the degree of FDDI students which were issued by Mewar University under a pan India MoU b/w FDDI & Mewar University. Prior to this, the IGNOU used to issue the degree for FDDI students. Clearly, the Commerce & HRD Ministries have failed to resolve a genuine problem of students, putting a question mark on their future. Sources say that had FDDI awarded with the INI status (Institute of National Institute), it would have been empowered to issue degree on its own. Reportedly, the ministries, UGC, IGNOU & PMO are working out INI status to FDDI but no decision is yet taken. The problem is the FDDI management is absolutely clueless and fully dependent on the ministry's initiative as they don't have the statutory power to award the degree. In addition, the govt failed to fill up the MD's post and the institute is headless since February 02, 2015 after Rajiv J Lakhara (IRS IT). It's a classic case of lack of succession planning. It is an irony that an institution like FDDI doesn't have INI oo Deemed Univ status - an institution that has the potential to support PM's mission like Make-in-India & Skilled India. FDDI produces talent for the fashion industry and retail merchandising sector and one professional from FDDI leads production units with an average worker capacity of 2000 (workers). The irony is is even though the FDDI has 3000 students across 12 campuses (across the country), 100% placement rate, 1500 Crs investment on 12 campuses, yet it's not empowered to issue its own degree. Reportedly, a high-powered meeting took place in the HRD Ministry to accord the FDDI the status of INI or a Deemed Univ. It was attended by two Jt. Secretaries from the PMO, Commerce Secretary, HRD Secretary, UGC & IGNOU, but the outcome is yet to be made public.
