The meeting at the ECI headquarters in New Delhi saw Pant clarifying his stand to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the two election commissioners. The summons followed a directive issued by the ECI on August 5, which had ordered the suspension of two Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and two Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) for what it termed "grave lapses" and a "failure to perform their duties."

These officials were found to have violated data security policies by allegedly sharing their login credentials for the electoral roll database with unauthorised persons.
