One doesn't know whether it's a mere coincidence or a deliberate move. Both public and private telecasters are on a massive retrenchment drive.
To begin with, public telecaster Doordarshan (DD), the king of TV channels, has advised all its Kendras/Channels to slash the number of contractual employees by 25%.
Following a direction from Prasar Bharti, DD's Directorate General set up a committee to review the existing strength of contractual employees and suggest ways to reduce the expenditure under IEBR Head (internal and extra-budgetary resources).
The Committee, in its meeting, held on 18 Dec. 2017, is said to have recommended that all Heads of Kendra's/Channels be asked to achieve savings in IEBR expenditure by reducing the number of contractual employees by 25%.
DD's Directorate General has now asked all the Kendras/channels to submit the list of contractual employees whose services need to be terminated.
Among private telecasters, NDTV is going to make hundreds of its employees jobless. The Press Club of India on 21 December 2017 asked in a letter to NDTV Chief Pranoy Royto visit the Club and explain his rationale for killing the jobs of journalists.
The letter politely reminded him that the club did him a favor by "organizing protest meets whenever NDTV was targeted by the government or curbs were sought to be put on it. The PCI has led the struggle for upholding the freedom of the press and expression. There is considerable concern among journalistic community over the current reported move of your organisation..."
Then, in a rather apologetic note, it says that NDTV's retrenchment drive "might have been taken considering economic viability of running the news channel."
Dear PCI managing committee, when you know the answer, why invite NDTV's top dog to explain. Are you a tail of NDTV?
