The Odisha vigilance department has lodged a case against IPS officer Joydeep Nayak and five others over alleged misappropriation of Rs 88 lakh meant for computer literacy of SC/ST students. Since Nayak is on the run to escape the case, the Tripura government, from where he was on an inter-cadre deputation to Odisha for a long time, has suspended him.
It is said the 1991-batch IPS officer of Manipur-Tripura cadre was suspended due to unauthorised absence. Nayak, who is absconding for over a fortnight, has applied for anticipatory bail in the Odisha High Court.
As IG of Odisha SC/ST Protection Cell, Nayak in October last year proposed to the SC/ST department that funds be sanctioned to promote computer literacy among SC/ST students in the coastal areas of the state. The proposal was approved and on December 9 last year Rs 88 lakh was credited to the bank account of IG, HRPC. Two days later, it was transferred to the account of Axiom Computers. The money was then allegedly misappropriated by the accused.
