New Delhi (06.05.2025): Ahead of the completion of Praveen Sood's (IPS: 1986: KN) two-year tenure on 25 May 2025 the high-powered selection committee headed by PM Modi met at the Prime Minister's Office Monday evening and an outcome is yet awaited. The meeting was attended by the Leader ofOpposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna.
Reportedly, the high-level selection committee did not reach a consensus on the selection of CBI Director. It is assumed that the deadlock may lead to an extended term for Sood.
The current possibility of one-year extension to Praveen Sood is being attributed to the assumption “no consensus on CBI chief's successor”.
It is to be recalled that previously at several such ocassion also Leader of the opposition Adheer Ranjan Choudhary, Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi sent their descent notes on names and selection process yet the New Delhi establishment followed its plan and arrived at a conclusion.
In fact, the lack of consent and possibility of extension to Praveen Sood appears in sync with what dis rounds in power corridors. The extended tenure to Praveen Sood would endorse the buzz, which did rounds in power corridors. It was often heard that the CBI Chief's tenure might be extended.
In the event of an extended tenure to the incumbent Director, CBI the chance of Sanjay Arora (IPS: 1988: TN) for the coveted position would fade away as he would hang boots as Delhi Police Commissioner on 31 July 2025.
