Appointment of former Union health minister Jagat Prakash Nadda as the working president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been inevitable as the duo Modi-Shah’s any decision is not without any purpose be it induction of someone in the council of minister or dropping someone from somewhere.

With party president Amit Shah taking over as Union Home minister, it became obvious that he would make way for someone to take over as the new party president but anointment of Nadda was neither a decision taken in huff nor just a formality to comply with one leader one post norm rather it was a well thought out decision and part of a party strategy.

Actually the BJP was getting inputs about anger of Brahmins for getting raw deals in the party, so this decision would prove to be handy. But the most interesting part is that the BJP has much of a stake in West Bengal and Nadda being married to a Bengali Brahmin Mallika Banerjee who was also an ABVP activist could prove to be quite useful.

So the task cut out for Nadda is very clear to win Assembly elections in days to come and expand party’s base down south but before that to achieve the target of increase the membership of the BJP by 20 per cent. He has the experience of working in Bihar as he grew up in Patna only as Bihar is going to be the next trouble for the party.

After a stint into the Himachal Pradesh politics, Nadda was moved to the national politics in 2010 as national general secretary of the party for his organizational skills under Nitin Gadkari as the president of the BJP in 2009. Nadda made his entry to the Rajya Sabha in 2012 and was appointed a minister in the Narendra Modi government in the first expansion of the council of ministers in November 2014. He held the crucial health ministry since then. His name was also considered for the post of chief minister of Himachal Pradesh but resentment from senior leaders scuttled his chances.

It became clear the moment Nadda was dropped from the council of ministers in the second term of the Narendra Modi government and it was seen as a precursor to the organizational responsibility that was to be assigned to him. He was in contention for the post of president of the BJP in 2014 as well after Rajnath Singh became the home minister. However, he lost to Amit Shah who was Modi’s choice for the BJP president then.
