New Delhi (24.01.2026): The hunt for a new Member (Infrastructure) in the Railway Board has entered its final stretch, with the selection committee shifting its focus toward a long-term succession plan for the world’s fourth-largest rail network.
The high-profile post has been lying vacant since October 1, 2025, following the retirement of Naveen Gulati. Currently, Chairman and CEO of the Railway Board (CRB), Satish Kumar, is holding the additional charge of the Infrastructure portfolio.
The hunt for MI assumes significance as the Railways fast-tracks the Kavach anti-collision system rollout and massive station redevelopment projects under the Amrit Bharat scheme, all of which fall under the Infrastructure umbrella.
The Contenders: A 1988-Batch Face-off
Key sources indicate that four senior officers from the 1988 batch, all currently serving in the Apex Scale as General Managers of various zones, were recently called for high-level interactions. Vivek Kumar Gupta (GM, Western Railways), Parmeshwar Funkwal (GM, ECoR, Bhubaneshwar), Tarun Prakash (GM, SECR, Bilaspur) and Shailesh Gupta (GM, Production Unit).
Vivek Kumar Gupta (IRSE), known for his administrative grip, is widely considered the front-runner for the said key post.
Strategic Succession Planning:
The selection process for MI is being viewed not just as a move to fill a vacancy, but as a roadmap for the future leadership of the national carrier. With the current CRB, Satish Kumar, slated to complete his extended tenure in August 2026, the committee is reportedly looking for a candidate who can provide both immediate expertise and future continuity.
A key source suggested that V K Gupta is being projected as the primary choice for Member Infrastructure, with an eye on his eventual elevation to the post of Chairman/CEO in eight months. This strategy would create a "domino effect," where one of the remaining three contenders could then be elevated to fill the Member Infrastructure role vacated by Gupta later this year.
