New Delhi (27.11.2024): Being upright and pretending to be upright has a very tenuous link. A Member of a Parliament Standing Committee recently shot a letter to its chairperson expressing his inability to accept customary gifts offered to him by two Central PSUs under the same ministry. Gifts included a 1 gm gold coin and a 100 gms silver bullion. The MP offered his gratitude to the concerned official and the concerned ministry for the elaborate arrangement during the study tour in Bangalore, Tirupati and Hyderabad which took place between October 31 to November 07, 2024.
The MP also underlined the glorious tradition of hospitality by offering gifts as a good gesture while expressing reservations on gifts other than bouquet, shawls, paintings etc. Rather he highlighted the apathy of workers and people all around with poor facilities and services offered to the public. Reminding public representatives’ duty of adhering to morality and ethics, he expressed his inability to accept gifts and offered to return them in front of the committee members.
However, contrary to this, insiders say that the concerned CPSE had distributed these commemorative coins to all its employees on its Golden jubilee Anniversary and the MP too got one that was left over. The insiders claim that he was miffed for being given what others were offered.
Actually, there had been cases in the past when gifts were demanded. A senior official of another CPSEs under the same ministry quipped that a senior politician as leader of the opposition who was member of the Standing Committee expressed dismay over the gift offered to him. There is a mismatch between said and done in most of the cases.
