On Thursday, he tweeted about a US State Department report that says India's growth rate of 7.5 percent may be over-estimated. He also took note of economist noble laureate Joseph Stiglitz comments on Wednesday that Indian policymakers should focus on growing India's economy rapidly rather than "getting overly obsessed about inflation". SS's tweeting of both the US state department report and Stiglitz's comments are seen as an indictment of AJ and vindication of the stand taken by SS. The renewed attack of SS against AJ is considered significant in the background of AJ's removal from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. While AJ's removal from the I&B Ministry shows his depleted value in information management, the induction of two MoS in the Finance Ministry may be a signal to curtail his role in the financial management of the country. While the Lok Sabha elections 2019 may be far off, elections to five states are not that far away. And hence NaMo might have felt the necessity to rewrite the terms of his engagement with his old friend AJ who's not capable of winning him a single seat. The transfer of professional Minister of State for Finance Jayant Sinha to the Civil Aviation Ministry may put additional pressure on AJ to perform as he will now have to single-handedly take on the task of revamping the functioning of public sector banks and kickstarting the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund. And he is not qualified for that - unlike SS who's a world-renowned economist. Jaitley also does not enjoy the support of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. His opposition to Subramanian Swamy's nomination to the Rajya Sabha was overwhelming overruled by the RSS, which many believe decided to nominate Swamy to take BJP's mandate forward. Jaitley, one of the most important ministers in the cabinet, has time and again failed to marshal much support from party members when SS trained his guns on him in the recent past. At the time of Jaitley defending Chief Economic Advisor Arvind Subramanian, Swamy openly threatened a bloodbath to those who offer him unsolicited advice to maintain discipline. None from the party leadership came to stand by Jaitley, clearly signalling a lack of interest among party members in allying with Jaitley. Now, SS is back with his guns having already fired the warning shots for AJ. (By M K Shukla and Rakesh Ranjan)
