Before she was shifted to the Textiles Ministry, HRD Minister Smriti Irani had cleared a list of candidates for the post of director for seven NITs. However, the President sent back the file following the cabinet reshuffle, advising the ministry to take the opinion of Irani's successor, Prakash Javadekar. The file, in its original form, was sent back to the President with names for only six NITs. The ministry, at Javadekar's behest, is said to have decided to drop the candidate approved by Irani for NIT Durgapur. That's because the ministry is said to have received a few complaints about Irani's selection for Durgapur NIT. This made Javadekar decide that a new candidate is picked up, for which the process is on.
