The incumbent Ambassador to Russia Pankaj Saran (IFS:1982) appointed Deputy National Security Adviser (Dy NSA) for a period of two years. Until retirement in November 2018 Saran's appointment will be considered on deputation basis whereas post November 2018 (retirement) the remainder period will be considered under re-employment on-contract basis.
This is for the second time National Security Council (NSC) will have two Dy NSAs.
It may be underlined that former R&AW Chief Rajinder Khanna was made Dy NSA January this year. It was for the first time that both the NSA and his deputy were former intelligence officers.
The NSC, headed by Modi with National Security Adviser (NSA) Ajit Doval as Secretary, is the apex body on internal and external security matters.
