NEW DELHI (01.06.2026): Following the retirement of M Nagaraju (IAS: 1993: TR), Special Secretary in the Department of Financial Services (DFS) Sanjay Lohiya (IAS: 1994: AM) has taken over as Secretary of the Department. This marks a strategic transition at the helm of India's financial regulatory architecture. Following a major bureaucratic reshuffle on March 31, 2026, Lohiya has officially stepped into the role on June 1, 2026, succeeding Nagaraju.
Lohiya’s new stint as Union Secretary follows a brief stint as Special Secretary in the same department — a role created by temporarily upgrading a joint secretary level post to ensure a smooth leadership change. Previously, he served as Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Mines.
The Roadmap Ahead:
The DFS is the powerhouse of the Ministry of Finance, overseeing the health of Public Sector Banks (PSBs), insurance reforms, and the nation’s pension systems. Lohiya has taken over the charge of the department at a juncture when its focus is shifting toward:
  • Digital Financial Inclusion: Scaling the next generation of UPI and digital banking infrastructure.
  • PSB Governance: Strengthening the balance sheets and operational autonomy of state-run banks.
  • Insurance Penetration: Driving the "Insurance for All by 2047" initiative through regulatory easing.
