While addressing 183 IAS probationers (including 3 from the Bhutan Civil Service) on February 16, 2015 Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged them to identify and promote the public interest while discharging their official duties. Terming 'public interest the foremost objective and essence of democracy PM Modi underlined the need for quality of service be judged even by international standard. Referring to the teachings of Lord Buddha, the Prime Minister motivated the probationers and suggested to consider it ("light the lamp within you" - अप्पो दीप भवः) as the best guide in their career. PM referred to his recent advice to all Secretaries of the Union Government to visit their first place of posting, and see what changes, if any, have happened there, even as they progressed in their careers. Interestingly, three issues drew much attention during the interactive session between the PM and Probationers; development and alienation of North East region, 21st century India and defence preparedness of India. While replying to the questions from probationers PM shared his eager and will power for the development of NE Region and underlined the need for best possible implementation of policies. PM emphasized the need for infrastructure development in the North-East to improve accessibility and connectivity with other parts of India and said; once infrastructure develops, the North-East will be able to progress.
