New Delhi (14.06.2025): London-bound Air India aircraft’s crash in Ahmedabad has brought renewed focus on aviation safety and regulatory oversight. A Parliamentary Standing Committee in its March 2025 report had raised similar concerns. In its review of the Ministry of Civil Aviation’s demands for grants, the panel flagged serious concerns about skewed fund allocation, understaffing, and modest investment in security and accident investigation infrastructure.
Shortage of staff was highlighted by the committee report which also took note of the significant staff shortages. The DGCA is operating with over 53 percent of its sanctioned posts vacant, the BCAS has a vacancy rate of nearly 35 percent, while the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has over 3,200 vacancies, 17 percent of its sanctioned strength raising, concerns over operational efficiency and airport expansion. Such issues make aircraft prone to accident which the government must pay heed to.
