Chandigarh (19.06.2023): In yet another attempt to lock horns with the Centre, the Punjab government is planning to bring a bill in the Assembly for the appointment of DGP in a Special Session on June 20, 2023. As per the draft proposal, a committee will be constituted which will be chaired by a retired high court justice.
The committee will finalise a panel and send it to the government. The state government would appoint DGP of the state from the panel. This will also question the decision of the Supreme court which gave its ruling on the appointment of state DGPs. Gaurav Yadav (IPS: 1992: PB) will complete one year as officiating DGP on July 5, 2023.
The Punjab government has the intention to answer the Centre that if it is not ready to honour SC verdict in case of transfer and posting right to the Delhi government, the Punjab government too may take its own course for the DGP appointment. Whether tenable or not, but the Punjab government has decided to go ahead with its plans.
