New Delhi (03.09.2024): The key post in a premier Institution of the Government of India in the areas of e-Governance and Informatics development has been lying vacant for more than a year. After senior scientist Rajesh Gera completed his 31-years long journey with the National Informatics Centre (NIC) on June 19, 2023 the additional charge was handed over to Amit Agrawal (IAS: 1993: CG), CEO, Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). Since then NIC has been running under an ad-hoc arrangement. It may be underlined throughout its journey NIC has functioned mostly under a scientist.
Over a year-long vacancy draws attention when NIC services is witnessing a transition phase. NIC services are being shifted to NIC Cloud based services. Reportedly, the said services would be managed by Zoho Corporation, an Indian multinational IT company headquartered in Chennai. Founded by ace scientists Sridhar Vembu and Tony Thomas in 1996 Zoho Corporation makes computer software and web-based business tools and the best known for the online office suite offering Zoho Office Suite.
If sources are to be believed under the new arrangement all ministries and departments have been asked to shift their data to the new Cloud-based platform as subscribers. Under the prevalent NIC arrangements subscribers (min/dept) used the service for free but having the said new arrangement complete its course the subscribers will have to pay for service according to the number of subscribers/individuals and number of services used.
