New Delhi (24.06.2022): The Centre on Thursday appointed former Director-General of Punjab Dinkar Gupta (IPS:1987:PB) as the new Director-General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) till his retirement i.e. March 31, 2024. Gupta replaces Yogesh Chander Modi (Retd IPS:1984:HY).
NIA Chief post was under an ad-hoc arrangement for more than a year. CRPF DG Kuldeep Singh (IPS:1986:WB) had been holding the additional charge of NIA following the retirement of YC Modi on May 31.2021.
Simultaneously, another senior IPS officer Swagat Das (IPS:1987:CG) was appointed Special Secretary (Internal Security) in the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) till his retirement in November 30. 2024. Das is currently Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau.
It may be underlined that Gupta was removed as Director-General of Police (DGP), Punjab, by the then-Congress Government led by Charanjit Singh Channi in October last year and was posted as Chairman of the Punjab Police Housing Corporation (PPHC). Gupta had then decided to go on a month’s leave after Channi took over as CM and the state government gave the charge to Iqbal Preet Singh Sahota (IPS:1988:PB).
During Capt Amrinder Singh's regime in Punjab Dinkar Gupta was State DGP while his wife  Mrs Vini Mahajan (IAS:1987:PB) was Chief Secretary who is now working as Union Secretary in the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation.
