New Delhi (01.06.2021): The President of India on Tuesday appointed former Supreme Court Judge Justice Arun Mishra as the new Chairperson, of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). This is the first time in its twenty-seven-year history that the chairmanship of NHRC has gone to other than a former chief justice of India. Further, former IB Chief Rajeev Jain (Retd IPS:1980:JH) and former Chief Justice of J&K High Court, and former NCLT President Justice Mahesh Mittal Kumar were appointed as Member, NHRC. The high-powered selection committee, headed by PM, had on Monday recommended the names to be appointed to the coveted posts in NHRC. The Chairperson post fell vacant after Justice HL Dattu completed his term in the first week of December 2020. The chairperson and members of the NHRC hold office for five years or till the age of seventy years, whichever is earlier.
