Myth may not be reality. But it matters. There is general perception that the West Bengal cadre officials have come to acquire better postings in South Block compared to the others. This perception has come to gain currency ever since Bhaskar Khulbe (IAS:1983:WB) was promoted from the rank of DoPT's additional secretary to the Secretary of the PMO and Sanjay Mitra (IAS:1982:WB) was appointed as Defence Secretary. The reality, though, is that, in the last four years, not too many officers from the WB cadre have joined the center, not the least because of state CM Mamta Banerjee's extreme reluctance to let her officers get posted in the center. That the political factor might have thrown cold waters on the prospects and aspirations of many WB cadre officials is another matter. At the senior level, besides Khulbe, Sanjay Mitra, who was brought from the state as MoRTH Secretary and later made Defence Secretary and Dr R K Vats (IAS:1986:WB), who was brought as Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, stand out. Apart from these three, there is no WB cadre officer at senior positions in GoI. In fact the fact portrays the 'cry of of WB cadre officers' as well.
