MEA appoints Additional Secretary rank nodal officer to coordinate on COVID-19 globally

MEA has appointed an additional secretary rank official as nodal officer to coordinate efforts at the global level regarding coronavirus after WHO declared COVID-19 as a pandemic.

COVID-19 has spread to over 90 countries that originated in Wuhan in China in December 2019 claiming over 4,000 lives and infecting over 1,15,000 people globally so far. WHO declared coronavirus outbreak a pandemic on March 11, 2020 and expressed concern over alarming level of spread and severity.

The government of India has suspended all visas to India till April 15 as part of measures to contain its spread. The total number of COVID-19 cases in India has jumped to 62. Out of the 60 cases, 36 are Indian citizens.
