Secretary, East: Riva Ganguly to succeed Vijay Thakur Singh

The NaMo administration on Thursday announced the appointment of Mrs. Riva Ganguly Das (IFS:1986) as next Secretary (East) in the Ministry of External Affairs vice Mrs Vijay Singh Thakur (IFS:1985), the outgoing Secretary superannuating on 30 September 2020. 

Presently, Ganguly is the High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh.

Gaitri Kumar takes over as India’s high commissioner to UK

Gaitri Issar Kumar (IFS:1986) has taken over as India’s high commissioner to the United Kingdom. She is the third woman envoy in the key post since independence after Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit and Ruchi Ghanashyam.

Soon after taking over, She held virtual meetings with Tariq Ahmad, minister in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office; Richard Moore, FCO political director, and leading members of the Indian community such as industrialist Swraj Paul and Raj Loomba.

Paul tweeted: “India has great foreign service and very bright women diplomats starting from Mrs Pandit & have had the pleasure of knowing a few. Said goodbye to Ruchi Ghanashyam and welcome Gaitri Kumar. Wish you a great stay, you will enjoy this assignment”.

Kumar was the Indian ambassador to Belgium, the EU and Luxembourg before joining in London. Kumar takes over at a time when the Boris Johnson government currently dealing with the pandemic will soon focus more on Brexit-related issues as the end of the transition period on December 31 draws near. More trade with India in the post-Brexit UK has been a key aim.

Monika Mohta appointed as the next Ambassador of India to Switzerland

Monika Kapil Mohta (IFS:1985) has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to Switzerland. She is expected to take up the assignment shortly. Mohta has served as the Ambassador of India to Poland and Lithuania from July 2011 to January 2015.

Prior to that, she served as the Director of The Nehru Centre and Minister (Culture) at the High Commission of India to the United Kingdom from 2006 to 2011.

In the Ministry of External Affairs, she has served in many different positions including Additional Secretary/Joint Secretary (Southern Division), Director (Pakistan), Director (Gulf), Director (External Publicity) and Deputy Spokesperson, Director (United Nations).

Gaitri I Kumar (IFS:1986) has been appointed India's next Ambassador to the UK. She is at present serving as India's Ambassador in Belgium, Luxembourg and the European Union. Kumar is expected to take up her new assignment soon.

P Kumaran appointed India's High Commissioner to Singapore

Periasamy Kumaran (IFS:1992) has been appointed as High Commissioner of India to Singapore replacing Jawed Ashraf. Kumaran is expected to take up the assignment shortly. He is at present Ambassador of India to Qatar and has been serving the post since October 2016.

 

Kumaran has served as Deputy High Commissioner at the High Commission of India in Colombo from September 2011 to June 2014. He has earlier also served in the High Commission of India in Islamabad and the Embassy of India in Washington. MEA also announced that Prem K Nair, at present Consul General of India to Hambantota, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Republic of Niger.

The NaMo administration has effected some important reshuffle of Indian Foreign Services officers on April 29, 2020 by appointing Piyush Srivastava (IFS:1998) as the next Ambassador of India to the Kingdom of Bahrain. He is presently a Joint Secretary in the Ministry. Deepak Mittal (IFS: 1998), also a Joint Secretary in the Ministry, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to Qatar.

Jaideep Mazumdar (IFS:1989), presently Ambassador of India to the Republic of Philippines, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to Austria. Namrata S Kumar (IFS:1997), presently a Joint Secretary in the Ministry, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Republic of Slovenia. T S Tirumurti (IFS:1985), presently Secretary in the Ministry, has been appointed as the next Ambassador/Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations at New York replacing Syed Akbaruddin.

Tirumurti to replace Akbaruddin in UN, former MEA Spokesperson Raveesh to move to Finland

One of the most celebrated Indian diplomats in recent years, Syed Akbaruddin, is all set hang his boots. He will be replaced by T S Tirumurti as India’s permanent representative to the UN.

Akbaruddin and India’s high commissioner to the UK Ruchi Ghanshyam both are retiring this month and both were in the race of foreign secretary but Harshvardhan Shringala clinched the job.

Turmurti has been the secretary (Economic Relations) since early 2018 and had stints at India’s Permanent Mission in Geneva and as a director in the foreign secretary’s office and joint secretary (UN, economic and social).

Ghanshyam to be replaced in London by Gaitri Kumar, currently the envoy to Belgium, Luxembourg, and the European Union. Santosh Jha, currently India’s envoy to Uzbekistan, is tipped to be the new ambassador in Brussels.

Former MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar is set to become envoy to Finland.

Rajiv Chander, another IFS officer who was superseded for the post of foreign secretary, and was Ambassador and Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations Offices in Geneva is set to retire in August and is expected to be replaced by Indra Mani Pandey, who is currently the Additional Secretary (disarmament and international security affairs).

MEA: Anurag replaces Ravish as new Spokesperson

Former India’s Ambassador to Ethiopia Anurag Srivastava (IFS:1999) on Monday took charge as the new spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs. He replaced succeeding Raveesh Kumar. 

Previously, he also worked at MEA headquarters, Finance Division which administers its annual budget. He also served at India’s Permanent Mission (PMI) to the UN in Geneva where he dealt with work related to trade policy, refugee issues and human rights. He also served in the Pakistan- Iran-Afghanistan (PIA) division of the MEA headquarters.
