Maharashtra DGP DD Padsalgikar (IPS:1982:MH)
may finally get an extension of two years despite a petition filed against the
extension of his services. He was
appointed the DGP on July 1, 2018. His services were to superannuate in August
2018 but he was granted an extension. Because next to him in seniority is
Subodh Jaiswal who has been serving as commissioner of police, (CP) Mumbai
since July 2018. Since the appointment of a DGP is
supposed to last for at least two years, the state government is seen legally
and technically correct in extending the services of Padsalgikar. Further, since Jaiswal has four
years left for his retirement and since he took the job of Mumbai Commissioner
in July, the state government believes that he be allowed to complete his
current assignment before given the responsibility of DGP. An affidavit filed by the state
government in the Bombay High Court notes that "the post of Mumbai CP is
as important as that of DGP Maharashtra so for effective policing and positive
perception, both DGP and Mumbai CP should have full tenure. Both these officers
have a meritorious record and have served at both Central and State level
before." Padsalgikar had served with the
Intelligence Bureau (IB) before coming to Mumbai while Jaiswal had served with
the Research & Analysis Wing (RAW) before heading to the metropolis.
