New Delhi (09.05.2026): In a major top-level military appointment, the Government of India has named Lieutenant General (Retd) N S Raja Subramani, as India’s next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). He is the recipient of PVSM, AVSM, SM, VSM. 

Currently, he servs as the Military Adviser to the National Security Council Secretariat since September 2025. An alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA) and the Indian Military Academy (IMA) Lt Gen Subramani was commissioned into the Garhwal Rifles in December 1985, his career spans over 39 years of distinguished service.  

Lt Gen Subramani will also take over as Secretary, Department of Military Affairs (DMA). He will assume charge on May 30, 2026, succeeding the incumbent CDS, General Anil Chauhan, who completes his tenure on the same day.  

Known for his vast operational understanding of both the Northern and Western borders, Lt Gen Subramani is expected to play a pivotal role in enhancing tri-service integration and modernizing India’s war-fighting capabilities.
