1096With Ashok Lavasa (Retd IAS:1980:HY), next in line to head the poll panel, appointed as the Vice Chairman by the Asian Development Bank, the hazy picture gets clearer now. The deck is clear for another retired bureaucrat to get a post-retirement assignment. With almost two years left in his term at Election Commission of India (ECI), Lavasa would have superannuated in October 2022 as the Chief Election Commissioner. As the next Chief of ECI, Lavasa would have conducted Assembly elections in West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Manipur, Punjab and Goa. As per provisions Sushil Chandra, the second senior-most to the incumbent ECI Chief Sunil Arora, remains as the natural claimant for next Chief Election Commissioner. Even though Lavasa was appointed as VC of ADB but all it took place with the concurrence of the Government of India itself which is being seen as a clear case and well-anticipated example of ‘Kicking upstairs’.
