Months before the retirement of Justice Chandrachud as CJI, speculation was rife as to what position he would be given on his retirement. 

A section of insiders says that Justice Chandrachud would be the next Chairman of India’s top human rights body National Human Rights Commission (NHRC); a coveted constitutional position believed to have been kept vacant for him since Justice Arun Mishra’s tenure ended on June 01, 2024. Currently, NHRC Member Vijaya Bharti Sayani has been the acting chairman vice Justice Arun Mishra. 

Another section of insiders does not rule out the possibility of Justice Chandrachud joining the International Court of Justice (ICJ) which, to another large section, appears a remote possibility.
