New Delhi (15.10.2024): Alka Tiwari (IAS:1988: JH) is likely to be appointed as the next Chief Secretary of Jharkhand as the incumbent CS L Khiangte (IAS:1988: JH) is set to retire on October 31, 2024. But the question is if any such appointment is possible in view of modal code of conduct in place and her appointment could be viewed as wooing non-tribal votes by the Jharkhand government. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet on last Tuesday repatriated Tiwari to her parent cadre in Jharkhand who was serving as Secretary of the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) prior to her repatriation. 
If appointed, Tiwari will hold the position up to her retirement in September 2025 and she would be the fourth such officer who has been repatriated to take over as CS. However, the other cases had been of the BJP-ruled states. Khiangte assumed office as CS on December 6, 2023, succeeding Shukhdeo Singh (IAS:1987:JH).
