Behind the chair of Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari hangs a quote from slain US President John F Kennedy that "America is great because its roads are great." There is no doubt that the Minister has put all his energy into building the best roads in the country at the maximum pace of construction unknown before in India. During 2014-2015 his ministry awarded 7,980 KMs and completed the construction of 4300 KMs whereas in 2015-2016 it awarded 10,000 KMs and completed the construction of 6030 KMs; a steep jump of 40 per cent over the previous year's figure. The data testifies that Gadkari has got an excellent team of bureaucrats & technocrats to match up his pace.
This year from April 1 through March 31 next year, he is determined to step up the road construction pace from 20 KMs per day in 2015-16 to 30 KMs per day in 2016-2017, a staggering rise of 50 percent. When he took over the ministry in 2014-15, the construction speed was barely 03 KMs per day. That year he increased the pace to 11.78 KMs, then to 20, and now he aims at 30KMs. No wonder the Forbes magazine has been compelled to take note of his extraordinary commitment and a system approach to work.
