The sudden resignation of Delhi LG Najeeb Jung has set into motion the process of search for a new LG who may suit the convenience of the Centre.
Among the names doing the rounds figure former Union Home Secretary Anil Baijal (Retd IAS:1969: UT) and former Delhi Police Commissioner Ajay Raj Sharma (Retd IPS:1966: UP), and incumbent Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi (IAS:1978: rumoursRJ).
Sharma was the police commissioner of Delhi from July 1999 to June 2002 and was subsequently shifted as the Director General of Border Security Force (BSF). He is a 1966-batch IPS official of Uttar Pradesh cadre. In addition, rumors have been rife about two more names - Shakti Sinha (Retd IAS:1977: UT) and Deepak Mohan Spolia (Retd IAS:1979: UT).
Indianmandarins has learnt that of the four front-runners, Baijal has better prospects for the job. Initially, he was PM's foremost choice for PRl Secretary. Baijal is a retired UT cadre IAS and Ex Home Secretary. He is considered well versed with Delhi affairs and may deftly handle the complex relationship between Delhi Govt & Centre. Further, he is considered close to L K Advani and before the UP election, the government may well try to appease him by way of appointing his man as Delhi LG.
