Guwahati (07.11.2025):Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta (Retd IPS: 1988: AM), the Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) of Assam and former state Director General of Police (DGP), has tendered his resignation. The move follows a recommendation from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who cited a 'clash of interest' stemming from Mahanta's connection to an ongoing criminal investigation.
The 'conflict' emerged after Mahanta's office received multiple Right to Information (RTI) applications related to his brother, Shyamkanu Mahanta. Shyamkanu Mahanta had organized a high-profile music festival featuring popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg.
Zubeen Garg was tragically found dead in the waters off Singapore on September 19, just a day before his scheduled performance. The subsequent police investigation has intensified, leading to seven arrests so far.
A 10-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by Special Director-General Munna Gupta, is currently handling the probe. Last month, Singaporean authorities submitted the singer's autopsy report to their Indian counterparts. The SIT is now focused on meticulously piecing together the timeline of the final 48 hours of Zubeen Garg’s life.
