New Delhi (20.11.2025): The month-long speculation over an extension for Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) Chairman Sanjay Kumar Agrawal (IRS C&IT: 1988) has finally come to a definitive end. The air of uncertainty, which had gained momentum after a rare, one-on-one meeting between Agrawal and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September this year, has been cleared with the formal announcement of his retirement. Sources indicate that the private audience with the Prime Minister—reported to be the first of its kind for a CBIC Chairman in three decades—had fuelled widespread murmurs in Lutyens' Delhi about a potential tenure extension for the top taxman. However, an internal communication, dated November 19, 2025, from the CBIC puts a stop to the conjecture. The order confirms the superannuation of the Chairman and two other key Board members. Three Top Tax Officials to Bid Adieu The communication explicitly states that Chairman along with two senior Board Members, Shashank Priya (IRS C&IT: 1988) (Member, GST, CX & ST) and Aruna Narayan Gupta (IRS C&IT: 1989) (Member, Admin & Vigilance), are scheduled to retire from service on November 28, 2025. The CBIC has planned a farewell function for the three officials on the same day, marking the close of their service and paving the way for a fresh leadership structure at the apex body governing the country's indirect tax and customs regime. The development is set to trigger a significant shuffling of the bureaucratic deck, as the government now moves to fill the top three posts in one of the most crucial economic wings of the Finance Ministry.
