New Delhi (06.05.2021): The International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ) has honored former Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court Gita Mittal with its globally esteemed Arline Pacht Global Vision Award for 2021. Mittal shares the award with Justice Margarita Luna Ramos of Mexico.

The Award was constituted in 2016 and is presented to a sitting or retired woman judge to acknowledge her long-term contribution to the IAWJ and the IAWJ’s goals which encompass “promoting and protecting the human rights of and equal justice under the rule of law for all people, but especially for women and children; promoting and empowering women judges who can help uproot gender bias, end discriminatory laws, advance gender-responsive courts, ensure access to justice and promote human rights for all.”

The Award is scheduled to be presented at IAWJ’s Biennial Conference opening on May 7, 2021.

Due to the Xi Jinping Covid pandemic, the conference will be hosted in the virtual mode by the New Zealand Association of Women Judges in Auckland.

Mittal has accepted the award with humility.

Established in 1991 with its headquarters in Washington, IAWJ has more than 6000 global women judges drawn from over 100 countries as its members. (http://www.iawj.org/)

Justice Mittal retired in December 2020 after a 28-month tenure and was the first CJ of J&K HC.

Currently, she is the Chairperson of Broadcasting Content Complaints Council (BCCC), the self-regulatory body that addresses content-related complaints against non-news television channels in India. She is the first woman to chair BCCC, established by the Indian Broadcasting Foundation in June 2011.

Her tenure as CJ was marked by new initiatives in dispensing justice, particularly to women.

Among her many initiatives was the launch of a YouTube site for the J&K courts, beside a unique program called ‘Insaaf Ki Dastak’ to enable citizens in remote villages and towns of the Union Territories of J&K and Ladakh to file cases through post offices and other approved centers as well as setting up ‘camp courts’ in different locations.
