New Delhi (01.09.2021): The NDA administration is seen making history by placing more women at the helm of prominent public sector affairs. After appointing Ms. Soma Mondal as the first lady CMD of SAIL in January 2021, the administration appointed Ms. Mallika Srinivasan as the first woman chairperson of the powerful PESB. Now, it has appointed Ms. Vartika Shukla as the first woman CMD of Engineers India Ltd (EIL). She is currently EIL's Director (Technical). Her tenure as the CMD will last till her retirement age i.e. 28.02.2026. It may well be underlined that these promising women top executives earned their positions by competing with their male counterparts and by proving mettle. The story of Ms. Shukla’s rise from Director to CMD is an interesting one and it may well be remembered in the corporate world. Her selection is seen to have been linked, besides her undoubted talent, to the fact that it was another woman, Ms. Srinivasan, who in the maiden meeting immediately after her appointment in April recommended Ms. Shukla's name for chairperson's job of EIL. It is pointed out that it was possible that if the PESB had been chaired by another man, his choice could have been different. Ms. Srinivasan, who has proved herself as a competent businesswoman like Thermax's Meher Aga and Kinetic Engineering Sulajja Firodia Motwani, was chosen by the NDA administration as PESB head to implement its promise of bringing about gender justice in the running of government affairs. Readers may note that on the gender justice issue, the administration had signaled long ago where it was headed when it appointed the first-ever woman finance minister of the country in Nirmala Sitharaman. While selecting Vartika for EIL, the PESB also selected Renuka Gera a woman director, for BHEL. So, the trend of putting women at the helm of much of government affairs has been surely and decisively progressing, thus creating the process for removing the centuries-old blot on Bharat of disregarding its daughters.
