The concern of the Congress Party over the prospects of Kabil Sibal winning his Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh is heightening. With the support of 29 Congress MLAs, Sibal would need another five votes to get the RS berth. The Samajwadi Party has been willing to support Sibal by asking two of its legislators to vote for him in exchange for his legal counsel to SP chief Mulayam Singh. But there is no guarantee.
Further, the Congress lawyer would still be short of three votes. Although the Congress has been reportedly in talks with RLD leader Choudhary Ajit Singh, he is yet to give any indication whether he would support Sibal or not. That's because of the last-minute entry of Preeti Mahapatra from Gujarat. Ms. Mahapatra is contesting as an independent candidate and is seen to have productive relations in each party.
