coal-india-cmd-and-singareni-connection  The competition for Coal India's CMD post has begun in right earnest. Interestingly, the current CMD Sutirtha Bhattacharya (IAS:1985: AP), who is set to superannuate on 31 August 2017, also headed the Singareni Collieries Companies Ltd (SCCL) like his predecessor Narsing Rao (IAS:1986:AP). Those in the know of the affairs say that Singareni Colliery has a strong linkage/connection/affinity with Coal India and Ministry of Coal in terms of history. Former Govt of India Secretary Rajen Habib Khwaja (Retd IAS:1976: AP) too headed the SCCL from 2001 to 2006 and later became Secretary in the Ministry of Coal. Further APVN Sarma, an AP cadre IAS officer who led the SCCL 1997, became a Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Coal. During his tenure, Sarma executed a major overhauling plan to save the SCCL which was declared 'sick' (bankrupt) twice in 1992 and 1996 accumulating losses of 12.19 billion rupees. And by the time Sarma completed his five years fixed tenure in 2001, SCCL achieved a net profit of 894.1 million rupees for the fourth consecutive year in 2001. In the light of historical linkages, it is but natural that people are wondering whether SCCL may again provide the CMD for CIL. The incumbent SCCL CMD N Sridhar (IAS:1997:TL) is credited with expanding its operation in 2015-2016, SCCL and is now aiming at 85 million tonnes; and it plans to open 20 news mines in the next five years with a Capex of Rs 4000 Crs of which 10 new projects will be opened this year.  Despite his incredible performance, Sridhar, though, is considered junior to step into CIL.
