New Delhi (06.08.2021): The killing of Dhanbad district and additional sessions judge Uttam Anand on a morning walk on July 28 has drawn the ire of the Supreme Court on the lack of security to judicial officers all over the country. Hearing a suo-motu case registered by the SC after the killing of Anand, the top court said the law enforcement agencies like CBI, IB, and State police don't file cases even after judges lodge complaints about receiving threats to life and abusive languages on their phones in many high-profile cases involving top gangsters and others. "There are several cases in the country which involve gangsters and where high profile people are accused. So judges are threatened mentally also by sending messages on WhatsApp, SMS. Complaints were made but CBI has done nothing. No change in the attitude of CBI, sorry to observe (this)," Chief Justice of India NV Ramana said. Concurring with the CJI, Attorney General KK Venugopal said that judges need to be protected from attacks and security has to be beefed up. "I have a list of judges who were attacked. It's time some strong measures are put in place," he added. The CJI also referred to a new trend in the country of maligning judges when an order passed isn't to the liking of certain people. After steaming out its angst, the Court issued a notice to all States and sought a status report from them on the security provided to judicial officers. The matter will be heard again on August 17.
