Chief Economic Adviser Arvind Subramanian has called for the establishment of a single power market. His statement followed hard on the heels of a similar call from the Bihar government. He called upon States and Union Territories to demonstrate their ability to stand together in backing power sector reforms for the greater good as they did in the case of GST. Implementation of GST is "noteworthy and remarkable" and a tribute to co-operative federalism as all State governments and Union Territories arrived at a consensus despite diverse interests, tax rates, and systems. GST has enabled the creation of a single market, he said. "But it is a travesty we do not have a single power market," he added, addressing participants at an event entitled "Cooperative federalism to foster reforms: The case of the power sector", he said at an event organized by the Hindu newspaper.
