The new dredger may help DCI save on time and operational cost. Earlier, the DCI disposed of dredged materials out of the shipping channels into the river. This was found to be highly unsatisfactory as the discarded dredged materials flowed back to the channels with the tide. Therefore, there was no depth guarantee achieved. Later, KoPT started offshore dredging and disposed the dredged material to the nearby Nayachar island. The new dredger will help DCI cut the silt and dispose of it through a pipeline. IIT Chennai is said to have been entrusted with the responsibility to conduct a study to lay a pipeline between the dredging site and Nayachar. This will resolve the problem of reverse flow of dredged materials into shipping channels.
