After 17 months as acting chief, A D Gautam regularised as State DGP

RAIPUR (17.05.2026): In a major top-tier bureaucratic development, the Chhattisgarh government has officially appointed Arun Dev Gautam (IPS: 1992: CG) as the full-time Director General of Police (DGP), ending nearly 17 months of administrative uncertainty during which he helmed the state police force as its acting chief. Gautam brings with him an extensive experience in anti-Naxal operations and state vigilance.

Supreme Court guidelines under the landmark Prakash Singh judgment explicitly discourage states from appointing 'acting DGPs' for prolonged periods, mandate a minimum tenure, and require appointments to be made from a panel of shortlisted officers vetted by the UPSC. The state administration’s move effectively plugs this procedural gap by regularising A D Gautam as full-fledged State DGP.
