KEVADIA (18.05.2025): Signalling an immediate shift in West Bengal’s federal engagement strategy, a state delegation arrived in Kevadia for the Ministry of Tourism’s national conclave. The move comes within 48 hours of newly minted Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari taking the oath of office.
The presence of the officials marks a sharp break from the previous Mamata Banerjee-led administration, which routinely boycotted central government programs due to political friction with New Delhi. The administrative thaw was highly visible when Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat personally walked over to welcome the Bengal team before the inaugural session.
For years, sector experts have argued that West Bengal’s immense tourism potential—stretching from the Sundarbans to Darjeeling—remained underleveraged due to this institutional isolation. While the Kevadia meet serves as a symbolic ice-breaker, the real test for the new dispensation will be converting this fresh diplomatic synergy with the Centre into actual budgetary allocations and infrastructure development on the ground.
