Former Gujarat Chief Secretary Achal Kumar Jyoti has been appointed as the Election Commissioner. Mr. Jyoti retired from active service in January, 2013 before serving in various capacities in Gujarat. He was also posted at the Kandla Port Trust between 1999 and 2004. After H S Brahma demitted the office of the CEC in April and  got elevated to the top post, two posts in the three-member Election Commission had become vacant.
