Delhi is likely to have a Police Commissioner from other
state after Amulya Kumar Patnaik (IPS:1985:UT) retires on January 31, 2020.
Power corridor in Delhi is abuzz for the last couple of months about the new
appointment. The first and the foremost thing that crops up to the mind of
everybody is the limited choice of IPS officers as per the seniority list of UT
cadre for Delhi assignment. Further, govt’s move to do away with UT cadre officers may
disenchant police personnel across hierarchy and further any unprecedented
situation arising out of law & order may give fodder to the ruling AAP
government which might use discontent against it to attract people. In view of the soaring crime rate in Delhi, police-advocates
spat and law and order scenario post CAA are something the Centre's ruling BJP
is not ready to take any risks in view of the upcoming Assembly elections as it
could reflect badly on the BJP. Though Sachchida Nand Srivastava (IPS: 1985: UT) tops the
list who is currently the Special DG of CRPF and has wide experience of
policing having served in Delhi as Deputy Commissioner, Jt CP and Special
CP. The second name in the race is Ajay Kashyap (IPS:1985:UT).
But, his overnight transfer as DG, Tihar Jail is being considered out of
contention. Another name is Taj Hasan (IPS:1987:UT), Special CP (Traffic), with
his retirement far away also holds a chance. However, S Nityanand (IPS:1986:UT),
Special CP (Provisions and Logistics) is retiring August next year which does
not go in his favour. Overall, Srivastava's name tops the list but there are
certain issues may mar his prospect. Amid limited choice and uphill task ahead of the Delhi
Assembly Elections may prompt Union MHA to think of bringing senior officer
from outside the cadre but that might prove to be counter-productive as well.
