Tenure of EESL MD Saurabh Kumar extended

Over a month ahead of the completion of the extended contract of Saurabh Kumar as MD of Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL) the NaMo administration extended the tenure for another three months. His tenure was scheduled to expire on May 31, 2020. Going by the industry rumours Kumar was not keen on having another extension in tenure. Also, contrary to the rumours he had earlier rubbished the rumours of his resignation or moving to EESL’s subsidiary in London.

Saurabh Kumar took over as MD in May 2013 when its revenue was about Rs 16 crore per annum. The company’s annual revenue at present is said to be about Rs 2,660 crore.

After he spearheaded the world’s largest non-subsidised distribution programme of LED lamps under the ‘Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs and Appliances for All’ (Ujala) scheme he became the face of energy efficiency programmes. It may be underlined that EESL had lowered the price of LED lamps — from Rs 310 per piece to Rs 40 per piece through competitive bidding — based bulk purchase.

The Ujala dashboard showed that more than 36 crore LED lamps were sold under the scheme. The company also implemented programmes for LED street lighting, smart metre procurement, energy-efficient fans and air conditioners, solar irrigation pumps and electric cars.

If some well-placed sources are to be believed Amit Kaushik is ahead in the race for the post of Managing Director, Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL); a post which is being filled up through Search-cum-selection-committee route.

Interestingly, the post was advertised on 01.12.2019 and was withdrawn on 03.12.2019.

Presently, Saurabh Kumar, former IRS officer, is the MD of EESL; a Joint Venture of NTPC Limited, PFC, REC and POWERGRID under the Ministry of Power.

NaMo Govt goes for electric vehicles

By IndianMandarins 11 Jan 2019

The Department of Economic Affairs has signed an agreement with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), an entity under Ministry of Power, for deployment of 15 Electric Vehicles for their officers. Also, 28 charging points (24 Slow charging points, 4 Fast Charging Points) have been installed at North Block for charging these vehicles.

With these 15 EVs, the Department of Economic Affairs is expected to save over 36,000 liters of fuel every year and will also lead to a reduction of over 440 tonnes of CO2 annually.

To help the government’s e-mobility vision, EESL plans to replace the government’s 5 lakh conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) cars with electric variants.

The signing ceremony took place in the presence of FM Arun Jaitley; R.K. Singh, Minister of State (IC) Power and New & Renewable Energy; Ajay Bhushan Pandey, Secretary, Department of Revenue; Ajay Narayan Jha, Finance Secretary & Secretary (Expenditure); Subhash Chandra Garg, Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs; and Ajay Bhalla, Secretary, Ministry of Power. Arun Jaitley also flagged off the  EVs at the North Block.

The Department of Expenditure has also issued an office memorandum for all the government offices in Delhi/NCR to switch to electric vehicles.

EESL has received an encouraging response from Central Government departments and across states. So far, Agreements and MoUs have been signed with Central and State Government departments in Delhi, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Andaman & Nicobar Administration and Telangana.

EESL is also in advanced negotiations with other state governments.
