The High Powered Committee headed by PM
Modi removed Alok Verma (IPS:1979:UT) as the CBI Director. The committee included
Justice A K Sikri and leader of opposition in Lok Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge.
Verma’s two-year tenure as CBI chief was scheduled to end on 31 January but he was ousted 21 days ahead of completion of his tenure. Further, CBI ADG M Nageshwar Rao (IPS:1986:OR) will look after the duties of the CBI director till the appointment of new director. The ACC subsequently posted Verma
as DG, Fire Services, Civil Defence, and Home Guards. It may be mentioned that a day
after resuming office, CBI chief Verma had, on Thursday, ordered the transfer
of five more CBI officers.
