On Friday, the US House of Representatives passed a USD 621.5 billion defense policy bill with an amendment, adopted by voice vote, for advancing defense cooperation with India. The amendment passed was moved by Indian-American Congressman Ami Bera and is part of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) 2018, beginning October 1 this year. NDAA-2018 was passed by the House 344-81.
Will this act as 'bhut jolokia' to Chinese communists and their Arabian clones of Pakistan?
As passed by the House, NDAA-2018 asks the State Department and the Pentagon to develop a strategy that addresses common security challenges, the role of American partners and allies in India-US defense relationship, and the role of the defense technology and trade initiative (DTTA). This has to be done within a time limit of 180 days.
Considering the bipartisan support for enhancing US-India military cooperation, the NDAA is expected to have a smooth sailing through the Senate before it can be sent to the White House for the US President Donald Trump to sign into law.
In view of the above, one supposes that the background has been created for NSA Ajit Doval to talk to his Chinese counterpart during his forthcoming visit to Beijing from a position of strength and negotiate a peace settlement.
