New Delhi (05.02.2026): The weeks-long uncertainty surrounding the leadership at Maharatna major is set to conclude, with the administrative ministry reportedly moving to formalize the vacancy of the CMD’s post. Amarendu Prakash, who had abruptly tendered his resignation as CMD of SAIL on January 2, 2026, is expected to officially demit office on April 2, 2026, following the completion of a three-month notice period.

Finality at SAIL:
While the "power corridors" were rife with speculation regarding the nature of his departure, sources indicate that the competent authority has now signalled its acceptance of the resignation. The post of Chairman & MD for the Maharatna major is expected to be advertised shortly, marking the final word on a saga that has sent ripples through the central public sector undertaking (CPSE) ecosystem.

Short-lived Tenure:
The development is particularly significant given Amarendu Prakash’s career trajectory. Appointed in June 2023, he was one of the youngest executives to ascend to the coveted position, with a tenure originally slated to run until his superannuation in September 2030. His early exit, after just over two and a half years at the helm, underscores the challenges of leadership-consolidation in high-profile PSU roles.

The Road Ahead:
With the Ministry of Steel and the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) set to initiate the search for a successor, the industry is closely watching the transition. The official announcement of the vacancy will put an end to the speculative theories that have dominated the sector since the beginning of the year.
