New Delhi (07.01.2026): The Ministry of Steel finds itself in a precarious administrative quagmire as unconfirmed reports of Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) Chairman, Amarendu Prakash, tendering his resignation have sent ripples through the public sector corridor. While the "New Delhi establishment" remains tight-lipped, the purported move has placed the administrative ministry in a significant bind at a time when several high-stakes decisions are pending.
Sources suggest that Amarendu Prakash is also aiming at a senior leadership role at global steel major ArcelorMittal. Adding to the ministry’s discomfort are rumours indicating another high-ranking CEO under SAIL may follow suit, signaling a potential talent drain to the private sector.

Echoes of the NCRTC Exit:
The current climate of secrecy and denial bears a striking resemblance to the abrupt departure of Vinay Kumar Singh (IRSE: 1988) from the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) in March 2024. At the time, Indianmandarins broke the news, of Singh’s resignation was initially dismissed as "rumor-mongering" by insiders, only to be validated days later once the formal acceptance was processed. The current "wait and watch" approach regarding Amarendu Prakash’s papers suggests a similar administrative pattern.

Ministry in a Tight Spot:
The timing of this leadership crisis is particularly inconvenient for the government. The Ministry is currently juggling several critical administrative milestones. For example; the Search-cum-Selection Committee is scheduled to hold interactions on January 8 and 9 to finalize candidates for Director (Finance) at NMDC and Director (Commercial) at SAIL. Further, The Lokpal of India is slated to take a call on long-pending issues concerning SAIL next week.
While the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet’s (ACC) recent clearance of the MOIL CMD appointment provided a brief moment of administrative relief, the potential exit of a Maharatna chief threatens to destabilize the ministry's immediate roadmap.
As of now, the status of the Chairman remains in a state of flux—pending a final nod or rejection from the New Delhi establishment.
