Power corridors are abuzz with a story of how a big goof-up was averted last week. The story goes like this: a policy document was recently drafted that had implications for revenue generation. Matters like these are normally vetted by two different wings of a ministry housed in North Block after the pilot ministry drafts the policy. The one acting arm of the Ministry approved it whereas other disapproved it and sent it to the pilot ministry so that it could be put up to the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA). Right before it could be moved to the cabinet, the contradiction was identified and the matter was shuttled back to the ministry. Sources said if the faulty proposal had been forwarded to the CCEA, it would have caused huge embarrassment to the government. However, good teamwork saved the day.
