The Govt finally removed the CMD of Security Printing & Minting Corporation Limited (SPMCIL), a state-owned Miniratna which produces bank notes, coins, postage, stamps, non-judicial stamps and other official documents. M S Rana took over as CMD on March 27, 2009. His five years tenure had ended on 26 March 2014 but he continued as CMD assuming that he was eligible for extension till retirement age (May 2019).
After his removal the ACC named Pravin Garg (IAS:1988:MP) as CMD till a regular appointment is made.
CMD M S Rana's five year tenure had ended on 26 March 2014. The then UPA-II Govt had proposed that his tenure be not extended but no steps were taken thereafter and Rana continued as CMD. In its latest decision Delhi High Court order the Govt to take action against the same. The court strongly observed that even though the Govt did not take any decision on extension Rana should have left on his own after he completed his tenure on 26 March 2014.
His tenure witnessed rarest blunder which caused loss worth Rs 100 crores to the public exchequer by wrongly printing the Rs 10 note in 2014 with the signature of ex-RBI Governor D Subbarao.
