The 20 cities selected in the first round of smart cities mission should launch the project by June 25 this year, Union Urban Development Minster M Venkaiah Naidu said on Monday.This would mark one year of the launch of the mission by the Prime Minister, Naidu said. The Minister was addressing a workshop on 'India Smart City Mission: Next Steps' in New Delhi.
"What matters is not where a city stands now but where it likes to go and how it proposes to go based on a vision drawn from the inherent strengths of a city and backed by a credible action plan," he said.
The Minister urged the 23 cities participating in the fast-track competition, such as Warangal, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Bhagalpur, Dehradun etc., to improve their proposals by learning from the experience of the first batch of 20 cities and asked the top 20 cities to operationalise special purpose vehicles and launch smart city projects.
