Prior to this, Kumar had a brief tenure of over five months as Union Secretary for Youth Affairs. It may be underlined that initially he was supposed to get a Secretary berth in the Ministry of Electronics and IT but finally landed into the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports on May 03 this year. 

His lateral move from Youth Affairs to Education indicates that his posting in Youth Affairs could be just an ad-hoc arrangement. Having taken over as Secretary, School Education & Literacy, he may have a fairly long tenure up to June 2026 i.e. till superannuation.
